In a recent online bingo incident that made the news, a 16 year old won £180 and boasted about it on his Twitter account, which resulted in much controversy.

Any kind of gambling, whether online or not, is meant to be enjoyed by those over the age of 18. Although the UK gambling commission does not regulate most bingo sites, there are still restrictions put into place by the sites themselves to ensure that those under the legal age are not able to play online bingo. There are always exceptions who manage to slip by unnoticed – it’s not very often that they win though!

When the newspaper reported on the young winner and his Tweet, many people were in disagreement about whether he should be able to keep his prize or not. While some cited his win as harmless fun and experimentation, others said the matter should be taken far more seriously.

As a result, bingo sites have come under the spotlight and questions are being asked about whether they are guarded against underage gambling attempts or not. Some sites have been known to go to extremes, asking players to provide endless amounts of information before being able to collect their winnings, while others have far more relaxed policies.

So what’s the happy medium? The UK gambling commission should soon be regulating online bingo sites, which means that there will be a few changes regarding the age verification procedure. Players are currently able to use their credit cards to perform transactions on bingo sites but in the future, this may be done away with so that a better system can be put into place for those playing online bingo.
