Report daubs gambling top entertainment industry in Canada
The Canadian Gaming Association recently released a report which caused quite a commotion as critics believed the report is “one-sided”.
According to this report by the Canadian Gaming Association, gambling is the number one pastime in Canada. The report further states that gambling is the most financially significant entertainment industry in Canada and accounts approximately for 267 000 jobs in the country. Allegedly, the gambling industry adds $15.3-billion a year to the economy of Canada.
As counteract to the findings of the report, critics emphasised that the report does not account for the social costs of gambling dependence and addictions. They state that most of the money is recycled and comes from problem gamblers.
Bill Rutsey, the Canadian Gaming Association president believes that gambling has become an essential pilar of the entertainment industry in Canada, due to the significant growth it has shown over the past decade. He further emphasised that “It is now demonstrably clear how the majority of spending in the industry goes directly back to Canadians in the form of pay-cheques, construction in communities, and revenues for the programs and services and charities that we value.”
"We know that a lot of money changes hands and there's a fair bit of employment and economic revenue from gambling, but the real question is: "Does that offset the social costs; problem gambling first and foremost" commented Professor Robert Williams, a problem gambling researcher from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta.
The report deals with gambling in general and does not specify the role that online gaming has on the industry. Online gaming, and specifically online bingo has grown astonishingly in Canada and the US over the last couple of years.
