When 16 states in Germany voted in late 2007 to maintain state-run monopolies that restrict private online gaming companies from operating in that country, the effect was a virtual ban on online gambling in Germany up until 2011.
This is in direct opposition to the European Commission’s moves towards creating a free market between the EU member states.
The European Commission (EC) has its hands full as they, along with lawyers for some of the biggest online gambling companies in Europe, try get the 16 states to reconsider the new regulations which it feels are based on a disproportionate action.
We may be looking at a situation arising whereby the EC takes measures against Germany – a move that could see the country brought before the European Court of Justice.
Operators of online bingo halls are hoping for good news as the German public have show strong interest in playing the game online.
