The online bingo industry Stateside ground to a halt last year following the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Recently, Congressman Barney Frank launched an attempt to alter US law on online gambling, as we reported here (http://www.online-bingo.com/news/online-bingo-possible-change-in-US-gambling-laws.html) at Online-Bingo earlier this year. His aim is to allow online gambling within regulated parameters rather than the outright (effectual) ban that currently exists.
Now Frank has received welcome support from US presidential hopeful, Congressman Ron Paul.
Paul has attacked the UIGEA on the grounds of it being unconstitutional and has called it an “outrageous affront to individual freedom’”. He has publicly expressed his disapproval of the infringement on the US public’s right to make choices regarding gambling, saying in addition that he “ believe(s) strongly that the Internet should not be regulated by the Federal Government and … that people should be free to engage in the activities they wish as long as they are willing to take responsibility for their actions".
The implementation of UIGEA has tied US online gambling sites by prohibiting foreign operators from engaging in online financial transactions while offering online gaming options to the US market.
Should Frank’s proposal be successful, the American online bingo industry could be raised from its near-dead state.
